Xoft® Axxent® Cervical Applicators

Literature Library

With the Axxent® Cervical Applicators1 enable radiation oncologists to treat cervical cancer with the Xoft® Electronic Brachytherapy (eBx®) System®. The cervical applicator complements Xoft’s Axxent Vaginal Applicators for endometrial cancer treatment, allowing Xoft to now offer a range of gynecological cancer treatment options.

Benefits of cervical cancer treatment with the Xoft System include:

  • No radioactive isotopes
  • Minimal room shielding requirements
  • Point A coverage
  • Lower dose to critical structures
  • Patient transport to treatment vault not required after imaging
  • System portability
  • Two different angled Colpostat sets to accommodate female anatomy
  • CT compatibility and MR conditional       2

Design and Dosimetry

The Xoft cervical applicators were designed to maintain dose coverage to Point A by using titanium in the applicator walls to filter out low-energy radiation from the source. Dose volume histograms confirm that the Xoft 50 kV source has comparable PTV coverage to Ir-192, with lower dose to critical structures.

  1. FDA cleared for HDR brachytherapy for intracavitary treatment of cancer of the uterus, cervix, endometrium and vagina.
  2. MR Conditional: an item that has been demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MRI environment with specified conditions of use (specified in the Instructions for Use manual).

All Xoft treatments must be performed with a thorough knowledge of radiation physics, proper planning, dosimetric calculations and knowledge of radio-biological effectiveness; therefore, we require that a radiation therapist/oncologist administer the use of the Xoft Electronic Brachytherapy (eBx) System. We do not support the use of the Xoft System by anyone other than radiation professionals (trained and certified). We rigorously enforce this, as patient safety and efficacy is preeminent to us.
