Company Vision for Radiation Therapy - Powerful trends in cancer therapy shape the future as tumors are detected at ever earlier stages enabling more progressive treatments. New systemic therapies can shrink tumors before they are treated making less invasive therapy options an effective reality.
Patients are more vocal in lobbying for therapy innovations that minimize the impact on their quality of life both during and after their cancer therapy. And they expect these treatments to be available at their local medical center.
Currently, most radiation therapy is delivered by directing energy beams from the outside of a patient's body. This external beam therapy must pass through normal tissue on the way to the targeted tumor. It risks loading the healthy tissue and adjacent organs with unnecessary radiation. Exact targeting of tumors and tumor cavity beds has become highest priority in the radiation industry and Xoft potentially provides an ideal solution with electronic brachytherapy.
Electronic Brachytherapy
Xoft's electronic brachytherapy involves the delivery of hardened x-ray beams which behave like an isotope that can be switched on or off on demand. This revolutionary miniature x-ray technology could substantially improve the practice of radiation therapy by providing high dose rate brachytherapy without the cost and logistical complexity involved in the use of isotopes. Electronic brachytherapy allows the radiation treatment facility to minimize the problems and resources associated with using isotope-based brachytherapy. These include the installation of specialized shielded treatment rooms, as well as the handling, disposal, and replacement of decaying radioactive materials. This should allow trained radiation medical professionals to bring electronic brachytherapy capabilities closer to where their patients live.
The Xoft technology ultimately will allow energy and dose intensity adjustment to mimic various isotopes' penetration and dose rate characteristics. It will also be capable of providing directional radiation beams for the precise targeting of the tumor (bed). This will make it possible to treat a variety of anatomies with targeted radiation in a more convenient, accessible and affordable manner.
Axxent™ Brachytherapy System
The Axxent Brachytherapy System is Xoft's first product line. It is designed for use in Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) in the treatment of early stage breast cancer. It provides a therapeutic dose of intracavitary radiation directly to the region at risk without the complex handling and resource logistics necessary when using radioactive isotopes. The radiation emitted for this application mimics 192Ir, the isotope most used for breast and gynecological brachytherapy.
The Xoft Axxent™ Electronic Brachytherapy System is 510(K) cleared for the use in the U.S. The system is investigational for use outside the U.S.
